![]() George Mullen is an oil painting artist and writer from Southern California who maintains a large studio in the Gaslamp Quarter of downtown San Diego. He is a native of San Diego and a graduate of the University of Colorado, Boulder. After spending considerable time in the Middle East doing archaeological work, he authored the book Peace in the Middle East (Ican Press, 1994). He has authored numerous articles on world affairs since, but remains an independent minded idea person and is not affiliated with any political party. (George photos) (See below to view paintings.) In 2004 George put forth a unique proposal for a new identifier for the city of San Diego known as the City of Life. The concept is coupled with a broad thematic public art campaign intended to make San Diego "sing" for the next 300 plus years. Many prominent San Diegans (Endorsement Team) such as Malin Burnham, Dave Nuffer and Herb Klein believe this proposal to be a perfect fit for San Diego, and hopefully it will soon be formally embraced. In the world of financial affairs, George was one of the few vocal individuals at the very peak of the markets to predict what has become our current economic collapse. In fact, he was the first to coin the term "Financial Tsunami" to describe the crisis he foresaw in the article "The Coming Financial Tsunami" published in 2005. This term took on an entire life of its own in 2008 with CNBC's and Pimco bond king Bill Gross's repeated use of the term and Lehman Brothers CEO Richard Fuld blaming the Lehman bankruptcy on the "Financial Tsunami" that hit his firm. Now we see the likes of former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan, real estate mogul Sam Zell, and the Chinese government using the term as well to describe what has occurred. Though most laughed at George or thought him an alarmist when these articles were first published, no one is laughing anymore. Read for yourself:

George has been a dedicated member of Rotary since 1988, is a past president of the San Diego Mission Valley Rotary Club, and currently is a member of the San Diego Downtown Breakfast Rotary Club. Mullen’s Artist Statement: "Artist Statements and Biographies are meaningless hyperbole. Either the art is compelling, or it is not."
